Mekaeel: The year 2020 has taken a turn for the worse, the majority of countries and cities are on lockdown due to CoronaVirus. From new years’ resolutions of going to the gym and eating healthier to finishing a six-pack of soda every week wasn’t what anyone expected this year would be like. Corona Virus has resulted in online school, snacking to the max, and overall lack of motivation. Being at home every day and not doing anything except sitting in bed, watching Youtube or Netflix, and going through a half a bag of Doritos every day isn’t the most exciting thing. No going out means wearing the same sweatpants for three days in a row and not being able to show off nice outfits or new sneakers. While everyone is at home and not going out as much, they aren’t spending as much money, and many companies have picked up on that and decided to take initiative.
Supreme is an American skateboard and streetwear shop that was found in April 1994 and their first location was in New York City. Being that New York is a prominent city for skateboarders, the brand has grown tremendously over the last twenty six years and doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. Starting from being a skateboard company, they have expanded over the years into streetwear companies as well, adding accessories and clothing into their arsenal. Supreme is most known for their box logo hoodies and tshirts. Taking a minimal look on clothing, supreme box logo design includes a plain tshirt with a small square of a different color with the words supreme printed on it. As the brand has grown they have had collaborations with many big name brands like, North Face, Stone Island, Lacoste, Comme des Garçons, Nike, Champion and Louis Vuitton. Today we will be discussing Supreme’s most recent collaboration in their Spring/Summer 2020 release with Takashi Murakami.
Takashi Murakami was born in Tokyo, Japan on February 1st, 1962. Murakami has been extremely good at art since he was a kid and went to Tokyo University of Art for his Bachelor, Masters and PHD degrees in art. Murakami has taken the art world by storm with his fine art skills and his commerce media. Murakami's craft envelops a wide scope of media and is commonly portrayed as superflat. It has been noted for its utilization of shading, joining of themes from Japanese conventional and mainstream society, level/polished surfaces, and substance that could be portrayed without a moment's delay as "adorable", "hallucinogenic", or "sarcastic". Among his most popular repeating themes are grinning blossoms, notable characters, mushrooms, skulls and much more.
Takashi Murakami’s collaboration with Supreme was one for the ages. Supreme x Murakami dropped their box logo collaboration on April 24th on the Supreme. The box logo is a plain white tee shirt and the box logo design is an array of Takashi’s famous flowers. After Supreme released their collab with Murakami, they pledged to donate all the money from this collaboration to CoronaVirus relief. The crisp white tee shirt compliments the complexity and diverse group of colors that Murakami added to the design.Overall, the collaboration with the two brands was one for the books and easily one of supreme top three box logo collaborations. We look forward to seeing what companies supreme will work with in the near future.
