Mekaael: During this time that we are all stuck at home many people have taken different paths. There are the studious ones, who are taking online school as serious as their final exams. Then we have the “Gordon Ramsey Jr.’s” who have picked up a cooking manual and think that they are now world class chefs. The list goes on, but one group in particular has really been blessed by this quarantine period. The gamers. With online school being implemented and the majority of countries adapting to home based working, the gamers have extra time to play video games. By not being allowed to go out, many spend all their free time with a controller in their hands. Many gaming companies have picked up on this, including, Fornite’s Epic Games. Epic Games has emerged as one of the biggest and best gaming/Esports companies in the last few years. Epic Games has really capitalized in this situation and have landed one of the biggest collaborations in the world, Fortnite and Travis Scott, which combines the hip hop world with the gaming community, a collaboration we never knew we needed.
Travis Scott and Kid Cudi released “THE SCOTTS” on April 23rd, 2020 in collaboration with 2019’s most popular video game, Fornite. For those who don’t know Travis Scott’s real name isn’t Travis Scott, instead, it is Jacques Berman Webster II. As Jaques decided that he wanted to pursue a career in the music industry he came up with the name Travis Scott. He mentioned in an interview with Jimmy Fallon that the name Travis was from his uncle as that was his name and he really idolized his uncle and he got Scott from his music inspiration and idle, Kid Cudi whose real name is Scott Mescudi, so he “put my two idols together” and the product was Travis Scott. Travis has mentioned during various interviews that Kid Cudi is his favorite artist and has saved his life many times.
The collaboration with Travis and Fortnite was first seen on February 23rd, 2020, when a Fortnite leaks twitter account showed the coding behind the game and displayed that Travis would be added to the game in their upcoming season. A few weeks later another twitter account leaked the Travis Scott Fortnite skin and blew up the internet on March 13th 2020. Epic Games confirmed the collaboration on April 21st 2020 and tweeted that “An other-worldly experience like nothing you’ve ever seen is coming April 23-25. Fortnite and Travis Scott Present: Astronomical. A one of a kind musical journey featuring @trvisXX and the world premiere of a brand new track.” During the period of April 23rd-April 25th, Fortnite players were able to see a virtual concert of a giant travis scott performing his new song, something that’s never happened in the gaming world before.
The song itself is a two minute fifty-one second song which includes one verse from Travis and one verse from Cudi. For being Scott's first project after his last album, Jackboys, which was a bit of a let down, “THE SCOTTS” didn’t follow that path. The high tempo beat and lyrics fit very well. Travis’ verse was solid, but the song didn’t really have an obvious chorus, on top of that, Kid Cudi’s verse wasn’t as good as some of his verses on his previous project. Although there were a few flaws in the song, overall the concept behind the song and Travis’ verse was good, therefore, the overall rating is an 8/10.
