Juice WRLD: Legends Never Die

Mekaael: On July 10th 2020, the spirits of many people all over the world were lifted by the release of Juice WRLD’s new album, Legends Never Die during this time of fear and confusion. The Album is a 21 track album with majority of his songs being solo’s making exceptions for four songs, which are featured by Marshmellow, Halsey, The Kid Laroi and Trippie Redd. The Album skyrocketed and took over Spotify’s top charts with hit song Wishing Well taking the number one spot. On top of that, over 15 of the 21 songs were on Apple Music’s top charts.

To get a deeper understanding of the album one must understand Juice WRLD and his story. Juice WRLD released his first album, Goodbye & Good Riddance on May 23rd 2018, which blew up over the summer of 2018. Hit songs All Girls Are The Same and Lucid Dreams were the more popular songs on the album and were about sleep paralysis, abusing drugs and the repercussions of being heartbroken. Many of his listeners and fans resonated with these themes and Juice took off. Following his first album he released his Sophomore album which was a collaboration with one of his musical idols and inspirations, Future. The Album titled Future & Juice WRLD Present… WRLD ON DRUGS included hit songs like Jet Lag, Fine China and Make it Back. Following this album Juice released his Sophomore solo album titled Death Race For Love on March 9th 2020 which included hit songs such as Empty, Hear Me Calling and Robbery. The album exceeded expectations and from that day on, people would remember the name Juice WRLD.

A prominent theme featured in a lot of Juice WRLD’s music was his connection to drugs and lean (mixture of sprite and prescribed cough syrup) and how he used them to cope with heartbreak. He mentioned in various songs his constant use of substances which harmed his body physically and affected him mentally. Juice WRLD would constantly be under the influence, whether it was marijuana, lean, alcohol or worse. Sadly, on December 8th 2019 he passed away while landing into Chicago on a private jet. He died due to a seizure which was caused from an overdose of codeine and oxycodone. His death shocked the world as he sadly passed away at the young age of 21.

His most recent album, Legends Never Die was an album that listeners had mixed emotions about. On one hand people felt it didn’t meet the standards of his previous singles and albums and on the other hand people felt it was one of his best albums. Legends Never Die was one of Juice WRLDs best albums. The album contained songs that people with different music tastes could all enjoy, a variety of beats and many features. The key part of the album that stood out was the lyrics. Although this album was recorded before Juice WRLD passed away many of the lyrics connected to his overdose and many of the demons he was facing. For example off of the 14th track, Wishing Well, ‘If it wasn't for the pills, I wouldn't be here But if I keep taking these pills, I won't be here’ and from the albums 4th track, Bad Energy, ‘I got voices in my head, they keep me up at night, Said I was okay, but I'm lying, feel like that I'm dying, Soul screaming and crying, feel my brain frying, Try to numb the pain, all the drugs I've been buying.’ There are many other references in the album about his connection to drugs and sadly they took him from us.

Overall 9.5/10. The album was one of the best albums of 2020 so far, the only negatives was the features and how they didn’t really improve the songs as much as they should’ve.
