Neil: 2020 hasn’t exactly been a great year for cinemas- amidst a global pandemic moviegoers have been relegated to the comfort of their own homes and popcorn machines grow cold as the months go on. However, the light at the end of the tunnel, the maker-or-breaker of 2020’s film legacy is Dennis Villenueve’s Dune, for which the trailer was released this month. Promising to be a blockbuster, Dune pulls names from Drama, Action and Superhero films to form an impressive cast lead by Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Jason Momoa.
Adapting Dune into a film is no simple feat, and the size and scope of the book are widely seen as too overwhelming for a movie format. Like other sci-fi classics, Dune is a trip to another world entirely, which the trailer showcases in transformative, rich imagery and a powerful soundscape that foreshadow a true experience for audiences come December. Villenueve takes credit for that, with experience making films that are every bit as dreamlike on screen as on paper (Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival are recent entries on his resumé.)
The Dune trailer thrusts the viewer into a taste of that experience to be, featuring a Star Wars-esque backdrop of several majestic settings each more foreign and grand as the next. If nothing else, Dune means a sight for sore, Netflix-dulled eyes and a visual feast. Select scenes from the film tell of a gripping plot and the percussive flow of it all breeds buzz for the christmastime release. Dune, based on the trailer, stabs at combining the fantastic aesthetics and visual adventure that Science Fiction promises while taking a Drama-type approach to dissecting a tale of personal conflict- the story of Paul Atriedes’ (Chalamet) struggle to rise to the role of his people’s king. The trailer for Dune offers a glimpse into the sensational cinematic experience we can expect on opening weekend, and a bright future ahead as the cinema makes its return.
